Adam X (b. 1971, Brooklyn, NY) is an electronic music producer, DJ, and owner of Sonic Groove Records. Born and raised in Brooklyn, his career spans four decades at the forefront of the global underground techno scene.
His career began in 1990 when he and his brother Frankie Bones opened Groove Records in Brooklyn, followed by the legendary Storm Rave warehouse parties in 1991—the first all-techno events on the East Coast. Adam soon began releasing music and touring internationally, developing a hard-edged acid techno sound through an all-hardware approach.
In 1995, Adam, Frankie Bones, and Heather Heart moved the store to Manhattan and renamed it Sonic Groove Records. Adam launched the Sonic Groove label soon after. Now with nearly 150 releases, the independently run imprint remains a vital force in underground electronic music.
Throughout the late ’90s, Adam pushed beyond acid techno into bleepy, jacking sounds, earning a 1998 compilation mix for legendary Wax Trax! Records. At the turn of the millennium, he began fusing techno with EBM and industrial music, pioneering the dark, heavy hybrid that would later become a defining force in underground techno.
The 2010s brought widespread recognition for Adam’s pioneering sound. During this period he developed projects including Traversable Wormhole, licensed to Chris Liebing’s CLR, and ADMX-71, released through HANDS and L.I.E.S. Records. From 2009–2019, he also secretly released the ten-volume The Secret Initiative series, revealing his identity only with its final installment.
Today, Adam X continues to release music across acid, techno, and industrial territories, while running Sonic Groove, touring internationally, and pushing the boundaries of underground electronic music.
